Temporary Food Establishment (TFE) Permit for Ignite
If your camp plans to serve food to the community at Ignite, you must obtain a Temporary Food Establishment (TFE) permit from the Virginia Health Department. This is a new requirement, and we understand it may feel like a challenge—but we’re all in this together. The Ignite Planning Association (IPA) is here to support camps in navigating the process and ensuring compliance so we can keep our event safe and fun for everyone.
Key Requirements for a TFE:
- Application & Fee: Submit a TFE permit application before the event. IPA can help answer questions about the process.
- Food Sourcing: All food must come from approved sources—no home-prepared items allowed.
- Handwashing & Hygiene: Camps must provide a proper handwashing station with warm water, soap, and paper towels.
- Temperature Control: Cold food must be kept at ≤41°F, and hot food at ≥135°F. Proper storage is required.
- Food Protection: Keep food covered and off the ground. Prevent contamination with barriers like sneeze guards.
- Sanitation: Have a three-bin wash system or an approved alternative for utensils, along with sanitizer (e.g., bleach solution).
- Inspection: A health department official will inspect your setup before you can serve food. IPA will work with camps to ensure they’re ready.
We know this is new for everyone, and our goal is to make the process as smooth as possible. We’ll be providing guidance, answering questions, and working together to make sure no camp is left behind. If your camp is in need of financial support to meet these requirements please consider applying for a Theme Camp Grant to help with these costs.
