2017 Afterburn Report
Ignite! 2017 Afterburn Report
Ignite! 2017 was held on Memorial Day weekend on the beautiful SpiritHaven property in Stuart, VA. SpiritHaven is owned by Scott and Kay Eutsler who were welcoming hosts and jumped into the spirit of the burn wholeheartedly. It was the third year that the event was planned by the IPA (Ignite! Planning Associates) under the legal oversight of the Transformus, LLC Board of Directors. Virginia’s regional burn was considered a great success by the vast majority of leadership and participants. The focus of the burn was leadership development, acculturation, Playforms, art, performance, and as always, incorporating children and families by emphasizing their participation and truly welcoming them into the heart of the event.
Early set up by key team leads and IPA members began on Wednesday, May 24th, and theme camp set-up entry was Thursday May 25. The main event entry began on Friday, May 26th. A stunning effigy, Bagua Torus, designed by Billy Skyote Romano was burned Saturday night. Our Sunday night temple was built by the children in attendance and was preceded by a glow-toy children’s conclave, which was adorable!
The total number of tickets sold were as follows:

Youngins Open Ticket Sales ($0.00) | $0.00 | 39/300 | $0.00 |

16 hard working volunteer teams made this event possible. They included City Planning, GREATLY (greeters, education, acculturation), Effigy Build, Sanctuary, First Aid and Logistics, Signage, Rangers, DPW (dept of public works), DMT (dept of mutant transportation), Gate, Illuminaughty, Parking/Traffic, PIMPS, FRT (fire response team), Spark Scouts, and 11th Principle, Consent. Security and Medical services were contracted with F.L.O.W. Event Services who are based in Asheville, NC.
There were a total of 35 theme camps, many known and loved from other regional burns, and a few that made their debut at Ignite!
In our second year offering art grants, there were five projects selected by the volunteer jury. Elemental Cloth by Artist Lisa Mitchell, Glowing Flowers Petting Zoo by Artist Erin Barry-Dutro, Illuminous Plumes by Artists Whimsy + Molly + Alexa Eliana, Pathway of Fae by Artist Whimsy, and Wish Jars by Artist Regina Twine.
Our annual gate sticker was designed by Amanda Brown whose submission was voted on by the Combustia online community pre-event.
For the first time we opened the properties existing pavilion stage to act not just as a playform location and town hall meeting ground but also The Center Campus Stage where we had the Spark Fire Variety Show a organized participant driven performance art showcase of live music, song, and dance.
A unique aspect of Ignite!, and one that we are very proud of, is our Playforms. Playforms are platforms for playful learning: participant-generated workshops that are focused on whatever subject our burners feel inspired to lead or teach. There were 37 different Playforms this year with 10 being targeted toward our Spark Scouts. The organizers of Ignite! want to encourage other burns to incorporate this exciting new aspect of burn culture.
As well, the 11th Principle was highlighted this year. The 11th Principle Consent team is devoted to exploring and addressing the boundaries of consent at burns and within social settings. They worked to provide educational tools and experiences to all burners throughout the event. They encouraged communication above all and wanted to ensure that all burners felt comfortable with expressing their limits and asking for clarification.
Ignite! originated as the Transformus Town Hall; this continues to be a vital component of the weekend. The Transformus BOD was on hand to share news and updates of the upcoming NC regional burn, introduce new leadership and give the community a chance to ask questions and make comments. Nearly all of the Ignite! participants were present for the Town Hall. Ignite! was also a chance for Transformus team lead and co-leads to meet with each other and their BOD support person in preparation for that event.
